How to use Zuppi Cook Mode: servings, steps and timers

A guide to Start cooking, ingredient amounts, step timers and resuming a recipe in the Zuppi Android alpha.

In this guide

Check the recipe before starting

Read the complete method and compare an imported recipe with its source. Fix missing amounts or instructions before switching into cooking mode. Look ahead for anything that needs preparation, such as cooked rice, softened butter or an oven that should already be hot.

These steps follow the current Android alpha. If you’re using the iPhone beta, some labels and layouts will look a little different.

Set servings, then select Start cooking

Open the recipe and use the serving controls to select the number of portions. Select Start cooking at the bottom of the recipe. The Cooking mode screen shows the recipe title and your position, such as Step 1 of 4. A recipe needs saved method steps before cooking mode can start.

  1. Open the complete saved recipe in your cookbook.
  2. Check its ingredient amounts and set the servings you need.
  3. Select Start cooking.
  4. Read the current instruction, then choose Next step when you are ready. Use Previous to look back.

Understand the ingredient references

Cooking mode shows Ingredients mentioned when it identifies ingredients in the current step. Otherwise, Ingredient amounts provides the recipe’s ingredient list. These amounts are recipe totals for your selected servings, not necessarily the amount to add at that moment.

For example, if a recipe for two people uses 200 g of pasta, selecting four servings changes that measured ingredient reference to 400 g. It does not automatically rewrite a step that says “add half the pasta”. Follow divided amounts in the method. Cooking times stay as written, so doubling portions is not an instruction to double a timer.

Start and manage a timer

When a step has a saved duration, a timer button appears beneath the instruction. Tap it to start that countdown. A time mentioned only in the prose may not have a timer attached.

Custom timer lets you choose a preset or enter a duration in seconds. Check the duration before starting. Timer controls include Pause, Resume, +1 min and Cancel. An elapsed timer can be dismissed. Timers remind you to check the food; they do not establish that it is cooked.

  1. Use the step’s timer button if it has the duration you need.
  2. For another duration, open Custom timer and choose a preset or enter seconds.
  3. Use Pause or +1 min if you need to adjust a running timer.
  4. Check the recipe’s visual and texture cues when the reminder finishes.

Resume your place or finish cooking

Zuppi saves cooking progress on the device. If the recipe has saved progress, its action reads Resume cooking. If the app reports that your place has not saved, use Retry rather than assuming the position is stored.

At the final step, choose Finish, then confirm Finish cooking. This stops that recipe’s timers and records the recipe as cooked. Keep cooking returns you to the method without finishing.

Leave a useful note for next time

Return to the recipe’s notes after cooking. Record something concrete: which pan you used, an amount you adjusted or a preparation step you want to remember. Keep personal changes distinguishable from the original creator’s method.
